From The Commissioner's Desk:
Dear Friends,
I am honored to present to you the Alabama Department of Senior Services Annual Report: Fiscal Year 2010. This report reflects the wide array of services that are required to serve the growing senior population while continuing to promote their independence and dignity.
It is my pleasure to share with you some of our many accomplishments which include both state and national endeavors. Among numerous activities in 2010, ADSS served over 5 million meals, hosted the 1st Southeastern Regional Disaster Planning Conference, reached the $200 million milestone in prescription drug cost savings for the citizens of Alabama, expanded the AmeriCorps program in all Area Agency on Aging regions, continued to build safe centers across the state, and began work on several federal grants which were awarded in Fiscal Year 2009. Our agency is preparing the aging network for the future demographic swing where there will be more Alabamians age 60 and over than those age 19 and under.
I would like to thank Governor Riley for allowing me the opportunity to serve the seniors of our great state. It has been a blessing to be able to work on improving services for our aging population.
Sincerely,
Irene B. Collins
Commissioner
